DESCRIPTION
Another selection of grape holly comes from Irish nursery Slieve Donard. Its name “Winter Sun” is perfect as it really starts flowering well before Christmas if the beginning of winter is mild without substantial frosts. If the frosts come early the buds (unless damaged by extremely harsh weather) wait to flower until the end of winter. Small and very fragrant, deep lemon yellow flowers are born on long, upright racemes. Its dramatic foliage makes it as successful in continental climates as palm trees in the coastal areas. The leaves are holly-like but gigantic, arranged in spectacular rosettes. New growths have reddish-brown shades. It can be pruned in the middle of spring. It is ideal for placing in the centre of groups as well as a standalone solitary. Being a little tender in our climate (zone 6) we strongly recommend planting it in semi-shade or deep shade, sheltered from winter sun and winds. If damaged by frosts cut off unsightly part and the plant will reliably re-sprout forming an even denser bush.
