DESCRIPTION Rubricaulis Aurea is supposed to be the hardiest holly from the aquifolium group with varigated foliage. The leaves are deep green in the centre with rich yellow, spiny margins which turn pink in cold months. It is a female variety which bears red fruits in the autumn. To do so it needs a male plant nearby. Good pollinators are varieties Blue Prince® or Casanova. It grows more slowly compared to other common hollies, it may reach about 2m in our zone (USDA 6). The habit is somewhat broadly irregular. To maintain a compact form you can prune it 1-2x a year. First, beginning of spring remove all unsightly, dead or too long branches. Then, if needed, in mid-summer trim the ends of branches to encourage branching and make a nice shape. Hollies prefer acidic, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Grow in full sun or semi-shade, this variety is less sensitive to winter sunburn. Fully hardy to about -24°C (USDA zone 6). Last update 12-01-2008 |
