Description of the plant:
Clapps Favourite is an early pear tree variety that was first introduced in the USA before 1860. It bears medium-sized pears with greeny-yellow skin, red flushed. The flesh is sweet, soft and juicy, “melt in the mouth”. It is ideal snack fruit eaten just as picked from the tree. It crops profusely, from August till September. The fruit is prone to rot from the core if left on the tree for too long. It cannot be stored over winter. Excellent for cooking and desserts.
This variety is self-sterile so you need a pollinator, preferably in your own garden, such as Conference or Williams.
It forms a mid-sized tree with wide crown and drooping branches with age. Pest and disease-free. Pears are not picky about soil type if the place is not damp or filled with stones. Adding of good compost will help increase crop and the tree will get stronger sooner. Make sure to stake young plants. Fully hardy to -34°C (USDA zone 4), it tolerates northern exposures and wind if it gets enough sun.
