DESCRIPTION
Golden King holly is a beautiful and easy to grow shrub with almost spineless leaves. They are oval to rounded, deep green in the centre and richly varigated yellow at the margins. The colder the weather, the deeper yellow margins.
Golden King name, however, is a sort of a screw-up: this plant is female producing a few bright red berries in autumn. This plant is one of the few varigated hollies that can take full sun and heavy frost even in Central Europe. We tested it in extreme winter when temperature dropped to -27°C for three nights, full sun, and minimum damage. However, it dislikes long-lasting frosts without milder temperatures during the day.
It is quite soil tolerant but will definitely thrive in moist and acid soil with plenty of organic matter. Fully hardy to -27°C (USDA zone 5b).
