Merry Christmas       20.12.2009
Christmas is just a few days ahead and we all would like to wish you a peaceful Season, let this Christmas be the happiest holiday this year.
Christmas is nigh ...       12.12.2009
I told you so! The breeze was cold and it did bring heavy clouds full of snow which has been falling down and down ... and down again ... all day today and created a beautiful scenery just 12 days before Christmas. You just want to make yourself a nice cup of tea, have a sit down in front of a window and watch the silent night.
Christmas is nigh ...       12.12.2009

Christmas is nigh ...       12.12.2009
See the footprints in the snow - back and forth? It was Santa Clause coming to pick up the wish list :-) Luckily many shopping centres are open longer hours before Christmas ...
Christmas is nigh ...       12.12.2009
True Christmas decoration? Holly of course! Do you remember Love actually, the movie? Watch hilarious Rowan Atkinson and his excellent gift-wrapping where a holly must not be missing. It won't take long as he is the flashest of flashes :-))) By the way awsome movie. One of the best Xmax movies ever - romantic but funny and intelligent at the same time.
Evergreen ... Ilex aquifolium "White Cream"®       10.12.2009
Well, winter is here. The breeze is much colder that the wind that stripped off the trees from the last remeaining leaves a couple of weeks ago. On the other hand, this is the perfect time for evergreen trees and shrubs to show off their beauty which not necessarily is only green. So the wintertime looks much more alive and joyful :-)
Evergreen ... Prunus laurocerasus "Etna"®       10.12.2009
My most favourite cherry laurel. It is dense, perfectly hardy and obviously beautiful! :-)
Evergreen ... Azalea japonica "Purple Splendor"       10.12.2009
Japanese azaleas are semi-evergreen or fully evergreen plants where the evergreen ones usually change their foliage colour in winter if grown in full or partial sun. For example this one show Monet-like mixture of bronze, fiery red and orange, green and yellow shades.
MAKE A PHOTO OF A SQUIRREL       09.12.2009
Have you ever managed to make a picture of a squirell? I have three naughties in my garden: black, brown and ginger. All of them so fast and quick that it is almost impossible to grab a camera and make a picture. This is the only one I made this week. If you do make a picture of a squirrel, send it to us. If you send it along with a picture of the same place without a squirrel as evidence that the picture is yours we will send you a gift token for 1000 Kè. Offer is valid for the quickest three of you.
Autumn colours ... Liquidambar styraciflua "Lane Roberts"       09.12.2009
Lane Roberts is a sweet gum variety with vivid red or blackish red autumn foliage that remains on the tree for a considerable period of time, often until Christmas.

Evergreen ... Osmanthus aquifolium       09.12.2009
One of my TOP 10 favourite evergreen broadleved shrubs.
Flowers in winter ... Prunus subhirtella "Autumnalis Rosea"       06.12.2009
When the autumn and winter is warm you can see tender pink flowers on bare wood of this higan cherry. There are never too many of them but they are so pretty and unexpected on a tree in December that you just cannot resist coming closer to have a look.
Flowers in winter ... Mahonia x media "Winter Sun"       06.12.2009
Warm December and November are the months when this mahonia hybrid starts blooming. On the background of fern-line leathery leaves appear upright racemes of many deep yellow flowers that open continuously until the first days of deep frost. The picture shows just a beginning!
Flowers in winter ... Viburnum x bodnantense "Dawn"       06.12.2009
This viburnum usually starts flowering in February. Could it be that current weather is not usual which is why it is blooming already. Whatever reason there is, "Dawn" has plenty of other flower buds that will wait until early spring.
Could that be ... winter?       03.12.2009
If you happened to watch yesterdays forecast you may have heard that last night the temperature was supposed to drop to zero or a little below in the morning. Well, truth is that at half past four in the afternoon the Moon came out like a giant glowing sphere and made it clear that the frost would be substantial. So it was. Already at seven in the evening it was -1°C and when I woke up in the morning I could see -4°C on my outdoor thermometer. The garden seemed like sugar-coated and the swimming pool was nearly good enough for skating.

Landscaping a front yard       02.12.2009
Beautiful autumn weather has made a few more landscaping projects possible. See, it would be a pity to have a front garden empty the whole winter

Autumn colours ... Liquidambar styraciflua "Slender Silhouette"       26.11.2009
About ten days ago when I last uploaded images to this page thanks to incredibly beautiful, sunny and warm weather I managed to make further photographs showing individual plants in their autumn glory. I was so eager to make loads of pictures, however, the fate turned out to be a real pain in the neck because only a couple of days later extremely strong wind came every night and defoliated almost complete garden, leaving only a few leaves on sweetgums which keep their coloured foliage longest of all deciduous trees. So the pictures here show reality about a week old, hope you don’t mind. And secondly, as if it was not enough, for some freaky caprice of the same fate the LCD display on my camera showed rather psychedelic colours in various shapes and sizes meaning it was totally broken. My only luck – against which all fate is as weak as a baby – are my devoted colleagues who brought their own cameras so I could continue making pictures of what you might like in our autumn garden while my own camera is being repaired. So sit down comfortably, today’s show is about to begin …

Colours by night ... Prunus laurocerasus "Marbled White"       24.10.2009
What makes our surroundings richer and more beautiful? Colours. From school we remember how colour "is made" - everything depends on the light and the angle etc. Well, but imagine you change the type of light. The colours change, or to be truthful our reception of what they look like changes. Not dramatically but they do. Now, say you make a walk through your garden at night without a torch or any source of light. Your only companion is black or deep grey, ocassionally pale green in the moonlight. But it only takes a few miliseconds for the camera flash and the colours appear. And since there is sun above our heads during the day, not flashes, the colours look a little different from what we know in the daylight - sometimes sharper, other times more subtle. Just have a look.

Eventually the sun was out today again!! After so many days of dreadful, cold weather we could enjoy temperatures over 10°C and can look forward to about 15°C during next week. It will help the nature gain deeper and more vivid autumn colours and everything will be just like it should be at this time of year (fingers crossed ...).
Coloured fruits ... Callicarpa bodinieri var.giraldii "Profusion"       23.10.2009
How about some purple-violet berries to your sunny garden in autumn?
Calocedrus decurrens "Aureovariegata"       23.10.2009
Or would you prefer vivid yellow?
Autumn colours ... Berberis thunbergii "Admiration"®       23.10.2009

Fruit ... Actinidia arguta "Issai"       22.10.2009
This is the best time for minikiwi to mature. The fruit is very sweet, small but tastes like real kiwi.
Autumn colours ... Cornus florida "Rainbow"       18.10.2009
Dogwood shrubs are the most attractive broadleaved shrubs in the autumn, next to Japanese maples and sweetgums.
Autumn colours ... Rhus typhina "Laciniata"       18.10.2009
Like a glowing fire.
Autumn colours ... Prunus serrulata "Royal Burgundy"       18.10.2009

Cold wave       15.10.2009
Not expecting that? Us neither. Not even half the garden trees have lost their leaves yet or even showed autumn colours. It does appear that global warming will show its way through these heavy swings of temperature. Remember October 2007 here? We had the same - snow in October, but there was one tiny little difference. It was on the 20th and lasted for JUST ONE DAY.
Where is the most accurate forecast?       15.10.2009
Do you know the forecast for the next days? I mean some accurate one. We have had the best results with RTL Wetter. It is in German but it is quite easy to follow - just click on the country on the map and then the town you are nearest to. So far they have been about 95% accurate!
Still blooming ... Liriope muscari "Ingversen"       14.10.2009

Still blooming ... Magnolia grandiflora "Bracken´s Brown Beauty"       14.10.2009
Last month there was one last bud that opened slowly into a flower and we thought it was the last one this year. We were wrong. Even in this incredible weather (cold, wind, snow showers) there are yet two flowers.
Still blooming ... Hypericum "Hidcote"       14.10.2009

Fruits ... Pyracantha "Navaho"       13.10.2009
Autumn is beautiful not only for the colour of leaves but also for colourful berries on many shrubs. Firethorn has plentiful of such, in glowing orange colour. They are not poisonous nor edible so choose some other frut for a preserve :-) In fact, some seeds contain small amount of hydrogen cyanide which in a large dose can cause severe health problems.
Fruit ... Cornus kousa "Milky Way"       13.10.2009
These pink spheres are not dangarous at all, they are even edible. Not as tasty as Teutonia variety, though.
Fruits ... Decaisnea fargesii       13.10.2009
This plant is called dead man´s fingers. Guess why (clue: look at the picture). And the fruit is edible. Looks like these two statements do not belong to the same sentence but it is true. Some sources even say that the taste is delicate and sweet. Wow. Can you imagine sunbathing on a beach somewhere south and the vendor, instead of his typical "ice-creeeeeeam", shouts something like "dead man´s fingeeeeers, sweeeeet and blueeee". I think in such case I would rather play dead ...
Fruits ... Decaisnea fargesii       13.10.2009

Fruit ... Prunus persica "Rubira"       13.10.2009
The taste is much better in case of this ornamental peach. If the fruit is let soften on the tree one can say it is good if you do not mid the bitter skin.
Fruits ... Ilex x meserveae "Blue Princess"       13.10.2009

Autumn colours ... Liquidambar styraciflua "Golden Sun"       04.10.2009
Another tree offering attractive autumn foliage is this sweet gum named Golden Sun. Why? Because next to beautiful leaf colour it has golden yellow twigs and branches. Just have a look.
Autumn colours ... Liquidambar styraciflua "Golden Sun"       04.10.2009

Fruit ... Ficus carica "Brown Turkey"       04.10.2009
Excellent fruit. Firm but juicy and sweet.
Øímov dam       03.10.2009
This is a place near my parents house where we used to go swimming. This dam supplies drinking water to the area so logically swimming is banned there. Did any kids on hot summer days mind?? We just watched out for the local "baywatch" and packed it up before they got anyhere near us. Believe me, it was worth it. Especially at night.
Today was a great and sunny day and autumn leaves looked spectacular on the trees. Maples regularly offer their breathtaking show changing colours from green to yellow, orange, red and even purple-red.

Autumn colours ... Hydrangea quercifolia       29.09.2009
Autumn is here and we are eagerly awaiting the battle among plants that want to offer the best colour-changing show. Some are proven winners before they even start the fight, others leave us surprised that they do change colours in the autumn, too. Such as this oak-leaved hydrangea which has just started to turn bronze-red.
Just blooming ... Hibiscus moscheutos "Mauvelous"®       25.09.2009
Extra large flowers of Mauvelous® swamp mallow in a quantity we have never experienced before.
Hibiscus moscheutos "Mauvelous"®       25.09.2009
We decided not to waste the beauty of huge flowers and invented super dooper fashionable head covers, which will be called Hib-Caps® :-)
Plumbago auricomus       25.09.2009
Summer at the Mediterranean Sea is closely connected with these prostrate shrubs bearing sky blue flowers in profusion.
Just blooming ... Ceratostigma willmottianum       25.09.2009
And if you ever wondered whether there is a hardy plant looking similar here is the answer: hardy plumbago with slighty darker blue flowers, blooming from early summer until early autumn.
Last summer day       22.09.2009
Did you realize that it was the last summer day today? It was so hot and sunny that it was hard to believe that tomorrow the first day of autumn was due. And just today I came across a great recording. I was a DJ when I was younger and I loved to play funky-house and happy-house i.e. dance music with feeling. Would you like to remember your this year´s holiday at seaside through lovely tunes of music that brings the irresistable feeling of eveyrthing covered in sunshine? Then just click PLAY!.The song is called Chanson du Soleil (Sun is Soming) and originated in Brasil. Whether you are 20 or 50, if you have a feeling for music it just makes you dance barefoot in hot beach sand of Ipanema ...
Still blooming ... Abelia x grandiflora       22.09.2009

Fruits ... Castanea sativa       21.09.2009
Not everything that has edible fruit is beautiful. And the other way round: not all beautiful fruit can be eaten. Damn! Let´s go for maximalism: let it be beautiful and edible at the same time. Take this this sweet chestnut - it is a gorgeous looking tree whose fruit is hidden in these extremely prickly spherical capsules. Still, it is one of the top bestsellers.
Fruits ... Malus PERPETU®       21.09.2009
These apples are just for decoration, cannot be eated. What a shame, they look delicious!
Fruit ... Vitis "Bianca"       21.09.2009

Autumn colours ... Liquidambar styraciflua "Stared"       20.09.2009
Our Stared sweetgum is showing autumn colours already. The reason is that it grows on quite a wet site so it thinks the autumn started in August ... We don´t complain because it is gorgeous!
Autumn colours ... Koelreuteria paniculata       20.09.2009
Another autumn shade brings this golden raintree - its leaves turn bright honey yellow.
Koelreuteria paniculata       20.09.2009

Fruit ... Ficus carica "Brown Turkey"       20.09.2009
Finally this year, fruit of this fig tree are ripening. Well, actually it is my fault that it matures so late. I did not reduce the number of fruit when it set small ones in summer and the plant cannot feed all of them. Well, at least some - they taste fantastic!
Fruit ... Cornus kousa "Teutonia"       20.09.2009
Aother less known fruit is this Japanese dogwood variety Teutonia. Every Japanese dogwood has edible fruit but this one has delicious ones, indeed. The friut has pink skin and orange flesh with a few seeds. The taste can be compared with kaki (diospyros kaki).
Fruit ... Vitis "Isabella"       20.09.2009

Autumn colours ... Nandina domestica "Firepower"       19.09.2009
Absolutely fantastic colours on this heavenly bamboo can make your garden shine throughout ALL WINTER. This evergreen shrub gets various shades of deep red and purple-red beginning of September and stays this way until new foliage emerges in mid spring.
Pictures from you ... Caryopteris x clandonensis "Blue Balloon"®       17.09.2009

Still blooming ... Campsis grandiflora       17.09.2009
One of our promises is to offer plants flowering in summer and for as long as possible. Trumpet creepers perfectly suit this requirement. That is why every year we offer a quantity of them in different varieties that have proven ok in our climate. This is the Chinese one with huge flowers bringing an extraordinary colour that no other campsis can offer: salmon pink with large, clear yellow throat. It grows slower than the Northamerican species, starts blooming at the end of July and continues until the first frosts if it has flower buds (= given enough nutriens and plentiful of sunshine). We tested its hardiness down to -23°C in a sheltered position and the plant lives and flowers profusely.

Butterfly bush is going crazy with flowers. If you deadhead regularly it will produce profusion of fresh, deeply coloured flowers until the autumn.
Prunus persica "Pink Peachy"       07.09.2009
These dwarf peaches are very attractive small trees. The stem is low but the crown is extremely dense and rich in foliage, same as with flowers in the spring. Now it lokks luxuriously green but if you hitch up the leaves like a skirt you will see ...
Fruit ... Prunus persica "Pink Peachy"       07.09.2009
... plenty of colourful, small peaches which, if fully ripened, taste juicy and sweet.
Fruit ... Prunus persica "Red Peachy"       07.09.2009
This variety may look the same now but in the spring it makes deeper red flowers.
My garden       04.09.2009
When the gate closes after the last customer in the evening, shop assistans leave for their homes, the garden quietens down. It begins to soak it the evening dew and with the coming dusk everything breathes tranquility. Quite a few times already I heard this question from our customers: Can you still enjoy your garden if you work there all day and all week? Aren´t you fed up with it at times? Well, to be honest, there are times when all I want to do after we close is to have a lie down. Either at home or on a deckchair at the swimming pool in the garden. Because garden is just a great oasis for me, be it a part of the business or just a quiet shelter, one´s own privacy when you want to relax. And I am just so happy to hear from you when you come or write that you feel it the same way, that you appreciate your garden as well as we do. We are here just for you and continuously look for new plants that can make your garden even prettier.

This time I made a few pictures from the house windows. I believe that it is necessary that your garden looks lovely when looking through the windows, it should extend the living area of the house just thanks to the view.

Because the only worry was where to go swimming. How about right here :-)

A conversation issue seems to be the hardiness of new and unusually coloured rhododendrons in our country. For some unknown reason it is believed that what is beautiful is not hardy or cannot grow here. Wrong. It can and does well. The only issue might be that not many gardeners have tried them hence the worries. We did and are most happy about lots of those beautiful gems.

New branch in Prague       17.04.2009
So the big day is over. Our opening day of a new branch in Prague was April 15 and the day was as lovely and hot as the few days before. We enjoyed welcoming our first customers in a garden centre covered with spring sunshine. A part of it is still a building site and we thank you for your patience while it is being finished. But we definitely have so much goods ...
New branch in Prague       17.04.2009

Happy Easter!       11.04.2009
The weather is great and Easter is here. As the snow is definitely gone for this spring (hopefully, never say never ...) we would like to invite you to Chlumec where we reconstructed our small office which used to be called the booth. Have look at a few pictures documenting its origin.

Witch hazels' blooming is on full throtle now and the shrubs are not just beautiful to look at but also very fragrant already from a couple of steps apart.
Just blooming ... Pieris japonica "Bonfire"       02.04.2009
Eventually!!! So the spring is definitely here and we hope that it will last for more than 1 day :-) Among the early flowering shrubs is pieris (lily-of-the-valley shrub). Bonfire is a new variety with erect racemes of flowers which differs it from the other ones. It flowers so abundantly that it looks like a lilac.
Spring cut ... Caryopteris x clandonensis "Grand Bleu"®       02.04.2009
Summer blooming trees and shrubs may need spring pruning to maintain shape and to increase flowering. This bluebeard needs it every year. Otherwise it would get leggy. Cut it to a thuird of last years branches. It will remain compact and will be much denser.
Spring cut ... Trumpet creepers       02.04.2009
Trumpet creepers need radical pruning every spring. Tree forms will avoid danger of breaking in strong wind and vines will grow denser. In either case the plant will flower more abundantly as it blooms at the ends of every branch. So the more new branches you have the more flowers you will get. Cut last year´s growths to 2-3 pairs of buds.
Just blooming ... Daphne mezereum "Rubra"       02.04.2009
I first came across mezereon when driving along the Vltava river to Lipno. It is many years back but I still remember that I had to return a few meters and park the car to have a look at the unsightly, grey slope that yet had not woken up after winter but this little shrub was already flowering. Small but very fragrant flowers are among the first to see in early spring.
Pictures from you       19.03.2009
Well, what is going on outside the window is really appalling. Fresh snow after an unbelievable snowstorm and light frost is not what we expect at the end of March, do we? And as I hear it is spread across the country, not just here. Everyone is looking forward to spring so I decided to ignore the white mess and to bring a bit of optimism showing you another beautiful set of pictures from one of you - our customers, evidencing much better weather.
Pictures from you       19.03.2009
These were taken by Mike in his garden in York, U.K., in summer. As you can see, Japanese maples are a passion of his and although they take up majority of the space they are located sensibly and in the way that you can never say "oh, another acer". You just must love them.
Pictures from you       19.03.2009
And when the space is totally used up there can always be a pair (or two) of elegant pots placed in free, paved corners :-)
Pictures from you       19.03.2009
English gardens are renowned for their evergreen hedges. They are dense and beautiful, often old and massive. They create a great feeling of privacy and offer an excellent background for any specimen plant grown in front of them.
Pictures from you       19.03.2009
Can you see the bench? I can´t wait to sit on one of them when the weather starts making more sense here. After all day´s work I will just sit and stare at the garden, watching it grow and bloom. Thanks a lot for the lovely pictures, Mike, we wish you many happy gardening days in future!
... and we're open :-)       01.03.2009
The first customers of this year´s season were taken by surpise when my camera asked them for a pose. They did and the official opening was done. The weather was not too great but the smiles were wide :-)
Just blooming ... Hamamelis x intermedia "Arnold Promise"       01.03.2009
What is this beautiful smell? Just blooming witch hazels have a lovely, sweet but fresh perfume with a dash of citrus fruit. We offer 3 colour in 4 varieties. The most pupular yellow ones are Westerstede and this Arnold Promise which are supposed to have the most profuse flowering.
Just blooming ... Hamamelis x intermedia "Jelena"       01.03.2009

Evergreen ... Ilex aquifolium "J.C. van Tol"       01.03.2009
One of the most luxurious hollies is "J.C.van Tol" variety with its deep green and glossy, spineless leaves, beautiful shape, and a reliable load of vivid red berries in winter.
Paeonia suffruticosa       28.02.2009
Well, tomorrow is THE day. 10 a.m. is the time we will open our garden centre this year. And the flower of tree paeony in the picture (forced from a green house) is just a fragment of the amount of beautiful trees and shrubs that are waiting here for you.
Opening soon ...       26.02.2009
Although our boys have been doing nothing but clearing mounts of snow off the garden centre area for the past few days the weather seems to have improved and we are happy to announce that this Sunday, March 1, we are opening this year´s season. The goods will be coming in constantly during March so if you chose a plant you want to come for before you set out on your way check our website if it is already in stock. We are open every day, 10 a.m. till 6 p.m.

City winter       20.02.2009
When I check the last picture update it has been nearly a month a new picture was uploaded. You, who have the gardening spirit like us, know very well why. It appears that this year´s winter decided to prolong it reign for as long as it can and in the last month there was hardly anything worth making pictures of. On the other hand, low temperatures and constant snowing brought faint-harted thought to our heads as if this year the winter should never end. And just when the situation seemed to have gotten worst the nature waved its magic wand and brought an awsome view of the "white rubbish" as we tend to call it these days. Do you feel like letting us guide you through ...
City winter 2       20.02.2009
... Friday midnight when the snow started falling so heavily, that it would have been a sin not to get home for a camera. The orange light of city lamps conjured an amazing, quiet atmosphere in the empty streets. Just imagine you are there, right in the middle, feeling snowflakes on your cheeks and neck.

Eventually flowers in winter :-) Hamamelis x intermedia "Jelena"       25.01.2009
Here it is at last! The most severe frosts have passed, hopefully, but you never know here, and shrubs that can flower in winter time have been woken up by warm sunlight. The earliest of all is this orange witch hazel "Jelena" ...
Winter flowers ... Hamamelis x intermedia "Westerstede"       25.01.2009
... and will be followed by yellow-flowering variety "Westerstede" which still has a bit more time.
Evergreen ... Aucuba japonica "Crotonifolia"       25.01.2009
Absolutely untouched by this year´s winter (-18°C) is this Japanese aucuba.
Evergreen ... Leucothoe keiskei "Royal Ruby"       25.01.2009
Leucothoe is one of the few plants to offer red leaves in winter.
Caryopteris x clandonensis "Grand Bleu®""       25.01.2009
This bluebeard does not flower in winter, or is not even evrgreen but makes a lovely performance with its dry flowers from previous season.
Evergreen ... Magnolia grandifora "Goliath"       25.01.2009
On the other hand, magnolia grandiflora "Goliath" is evergreen and thanks to its autumn transplanting to a spot with no winter sunlight it does not have ONE sunburnt leaf.
Evergreen ... Pinus nigra       25.01.2009
Not only leaves are the attractive features of evergreen plants. Cones on pines are none the less pretty. When I walked up to this pine today to take a picture against the clear blue sky, the sun was warming up my back and it was easy to imagine I was at a seaside. Simply because pines are very common trees of hot and dry climates an many of us remember them from our summer holidays.
Evergreen ... Pieris japonica "Prelude"       25.01.2009
Coloured flowers also bring an extra feature into gadens in winter.
Evergreen ... Ilex crenata "Convexa"       25.01.2009

Moth Orchid       25.01.2009
Of course this moth orchid does not flower outside but in the conservatory. But it would be a pity not tshare its beauty with you, wouldn´t it? :-)
Winter wonderland       11.01.2009
Winter in the country could be a true fairy tale. This picture was taken by an experienced photographer, my friend Jan Moj¾í¹ in 2006 a clearly brings the feeling of a winter wonderland. As soon as you exit the main, salty road to Èeský Krumlov, you can see countryside winter at its best ...
Winter 2009       11.01.2009
We are enjoying white nights. Not those Scandinavian when the have day at night, but the sky is light at night and the overall snow cover reflect each other bringing so much light you can drive with your lights off. But don´t do it on busy roads :-)

Winter in the country.
Beautiful day ...       01.01.2009
The very first day in new year is just lovely. Beautiful blue sky and sun shining. Temperature about -4°C. Perfect day for a New Year´s resolution while wandering the countryside.
Deutzia x "Strawberry Fields"       01.01.2009
Not only evergreen plants can be interesting in winter. Many plants have attractive bark that shows at its best when the plant has no leaves.
Our garden (2)       01.01.2009
Her highness, magnolia grandiflora Bracken´s Brown Beauty, in the middle of the picture. It is so well established now that it eventually began making leaves and new branches on older wood at the bottom.
Flowers in winter ... Mahonia x media "Charity"       01.01.2009
Charity is a hybrid mahonia which is hardy enough for zone 6. It stats making flower buds in mid autumn that open into deep yellow flowers in December if the beginning of winter is warm or wait until later. They have a lovely scent.
Metasequoia glyptostroboides       01.01.2009
Dawn redwood is also peeling its bark in winter, showing off orange and brown coloured trunk.
Our garden (3)       01.01.2009
In the froni of this picture there is a newly introduced plant in Europe, eriobotrya "Coppertone"®. This loquat is not supposed to survive less than -10°C, so the southern nurseris say. We got in in autumn 2007 and planted it outdoors. As it did not have enough time to make extensive root system majority of leaves were burnt by winter sun and fell down. Anyway, the plant made plenty of new leaves in the spring of 2008 and performed greatly, as you can see. It survived temperature of -17°C so far. It is well established now so we are expecting how it will perform this winter and what will happen if the temperature drops even lower. Why all the fuss about a plant that is not meant to be hardy? Cause it´s beautiful! :-)
Flowers in winter ... Prunus subhirtella "Autumnalis"       01.01.2009

Our garden (4)       01.01.2009
Another interesting feature, showy mostly in winter, could be seed pods. In case of this long-clustered wisteria "Macrobotrys" it is an eye-catcher.
Our garden (5)       01.01.2009
One of my favourite deciduous trees is sweet gum. Look at the right hand side of this picture - there is a half standard of "Gum Ball" variety which has not dropped its leaves so far.
Our garden (6)       01.01.2009

Our garden (7)       01.01.2009
These two plants offer an interesting contrast when planted next to each other: euphorbia "Wulfenii" with silvery blue leaves and pieris "Valley Valentine" with racemes of burgundy red flower buds.
Ilex crenata "Convexa"       01.01.2009
Would you ever consider black fruits on ornamental plants pretty?
Pinus densiflora "Umbraculifera"       01.01.2009
