Polystichum setiferum 'PROLIFERUM' soft shield fern

Soft shield fern is what you probably imagine when the word “fern” comes up in conversation. It has the typical fern appearance with strong, semi-erect fronds. They are double-pinnate, bearing small, toothed leaflets along the midribs. They remain nice and evergreen down to about -15°C and only then start fading away and the plant makes new ones in spring.
Proliferum is a variety with vigorous growth, and profusion of distinctly cut leaflets that fill up the fronds completely for a lush, rich effect. It needs light shade or shade, preferably acid, moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. If you live in zones 5 and 6 we suggest removing all foliage after winter to encourage new growths. Hardy to about -27°C (USDA zone 5b).
