Pine trees are superb trees which grow in a wide climate scale - from cold northern countries to hot coastal sites. They are probably most beautiful in their natural environment. Mountain pines and dwarf pines are common conifers of our gardens. Their limited size and dense habit is often welcome in less spacious areas.

Varella is a dwarf pine variety from 1999. From the first look it resembles another dwarf pine variety: Hesse. Still, Varella is smaller and more globular in habit. Its evergreen needles are quite long – up to 11 cm, curly, and deep green almost all year round, only in winter they may turn a little more light green or yellow green. It grows slowly and its new needles remain very short (3 cm) for almost the entire season, awaiting spring of the following year when they gain mature size as new growths emerge.

Dwarf pines look nice in small front yards or combined with taller shrubs and small trees where they help to fill the lower space. They are ideal for larger rockeries, containers on patios, and look great when surrounded by white sand or pebbles. Pines need full sun and well-drained soil that will not be too alkaline, no fertilizing required. Fully hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3).
