Catmint is a large genus of about 250 species found in most temperate and cold regions of North hemisphere. Apart from a very few annuals it is a perennial with aromatic foliage and mostly violet flowers, seldom white, and uniquely yellow. Commonly cultivated species are n.nervosa, n.sibirica, n. x faassenii, and further hybrids. Not all species produce leaves whose scent is attractive to cats.

NEPTUNE® is an exquisite variety of Kuban catmint from the Kuban Peninsula of Caucasus. An amateur gardener might say that it looks like a merge between Blue Boa agastache and blue dead nettle, and he can't be blamed. Apart from the main features typical for this Cuban species such as large leaves and large flowers, NEPTUNE® boasts very compact and dense, upright habit which makes older catmints turn green with envy. Yet NEPTUNE® wins again because it has much greener foliage that remains attractive for the whole season. The leaves are fresh green, scalloped, and heavily serrated at margins.

Nettle-like flowers are 2 cm long, rich violet, and open from early June for about 6 weeks. Then, if regularly deadheaded, the plant re-blooms after a short pause until early autumn. They are very attractive to bumble bees and butterflies. Thanks to extremely long flowering period it makes a great feature in summer gardens, on patios and balconies, and combined with spring flowering shrubs or perennials. If deadheading is not what you can be bothered with you can cut it about 10 cm above ground level in midsummer which will promote growth of new, shorter but stronger stems that will produce flowers from late summer until autumn.

This variety was named after a mythical Roman God of all freshwater and the sea, while in Greek mythology his counterpart was Poseidon. The plant was a showstopper during several shows in 2018, and earned two important awards in the same year: Mainstar by Vitroplant and Silver Medal at Plantarium. It was bred by Keen Jan Kraan from Boskoop, the Netherlands, in 2013 as a selection of open pollinated various unnamed seedlings of nepeta kubanica. Patent No. PP29556 was granted in 2018.

Catmint is not too picky about soil type, however, it is not as drought tolerant as some landscape designers think. Especially tall growing species should never dry out completely on hottest days of summer. And on the contrary over-fertilized and over-watered plants may become leggy. Use common garden soil that will drain freely, and irrigate the plant only when needed. Catmint is suitable for full sun and part shade. Very hardy to about -34°C (USDA zone 4), and suitable for outdoor pots.
