Mock orange is a reliable and absolutely maintenance-free shrub of old European gardens. It is popular for its snow white, scented flowers.
Erectus is an old lemoinei hybrid of mock orange from 1892 which seems to attract attention only at the beginning of the new millennium. Possibly because the gardens are getting smaller and smaller, and as this variety is compact and almost columnar it easily fits even a small front yard. From early summer it produces masses of pure white, cross-shaped flowers whose fragrance is not as strong as on the other large-flowered varieties. It grows into a densely branched, upright shrub about 1.5m tall and a little less wide. Deciduous leaves are narrowly ovate, mid green.
Mock orange is best pruned immediately after flowering. Only dwarf and compact varieties don't need pruning that would help them create a denser habit without visible seed pods. It will grow in almost any soil, extra fertilizing is not welcome. It can take urban conditions and pollution, as well as restricted room for roots. Fully hardy to min. -30°C (USDA zone 5).
