Dwarf fruit trees are excellent choices for those who have small gardens or no garden at all. These miniature plants can be grown in outdoor pots on balconies, patios or roof terraces so you can enjoy the taste of your own, home grown fruit.
Dwarf pears
are short and slender mini trees, usually with erect branches and plenty of fruit on a small tree. They are commonly at least partially or fully self-fertile so that they don’t need a pollinator which might be a problem to find if located on a city balcony. Leaves ma suffer from rust if a juniper is brown nearby as they host this fungi disease, a treatment is suggested if you see rusty orange spots on the foliage.
Varieties:
- Kurato produces tasty, slim-shaped, aromatic pears with yellow-green skin. They are about one third smaller compared to standard pears. It is partially self-fertile and grows about 1.5 x 1.0 m. Harvest: Sep/Oct.
- Garden Pearl makes chubby, green-skinned fruit of medium size. It is sweet and juicy, less aromatic. It is self-fertile and grows about 1.5 x 1.0 m. Harvest: October.
Pears are not picky about soil type if the place is not damp or filled with stones. Adding of good compost will help increase crop and the tree will get stronger sooner. If container grown it needs to be fertilized every year with a suitable slow-release fertilizer to keep the plant strong. Dwarf pear trees grow very slowly, making short but stiff branches that needn’t be pruned. They are fully hardy to about -34°C (USDA zone 4) and tolerate northern exposures and wind if situated in full sun.
