Stonecrops (ice plants) are variable and usually very tough perennials popular for their zero requirements for water and maintenance. Most of our C.E. cultivated hardy species and varieties are best grown in xeriscape conditions and offer a good range of foliage and flower colours. Ground-covering stonecrops are alpine perennials which are available in so many species and varieties that anyone can find his favourite. They are cultivated for the spreading, low habit, and offer a wide range of leaf shapes and colours, as well as attractive flowers. Many of them are evergreen, others are deciduous.
Description of the plant:
Coraljade is a deciduous variety of stonecrop developed by American breeder Hans Hansen from Walters Gardens nursery in Michigan who is known in our country as the creator of many beautiful sages. It is a low-growing, compact perennial forming elegantly smooth cushions with grey-green, fleshy leaves. From mid-summer cymes of light green buds are formed, soon followed by small, pastel pink, star-shaped flowers which completely cover the entire plant. This is a hybrid variety of stonecrop that combines the low habit of ground-covering species and upright stems of hylotelephium species. Mature plants can reach up to 45 cm tall in full bloom, and around 70 cm in width, but it is common practice to prune the whole plant in half in mid-June and with the help of a liquid fertilizer they will soon regrow forming a compact, heavily blooming, dome-shaped plants of a smaller size.

As every upright sedum it looks best planted in a mass or at least three plants together for a richer display of its flowers. Flowers provide excellent food for bees, especially in autumn when there is not much nectar in the landscape. Coraljade is protected by US patent No. PP33958 from 2022.

Stonecrops are perfect plants for autumn borders. They provide an extra colour on plant of architectural value. These perennials are easy to grow, they will like almost any well-drained soil, they do well in rockeries and outdoor pots (without a saucer). Cut them back in early spring but be careful not to damage young buds at the ground which are frequently formed yet before winter and overwinter until springtime. Let them dry out before next watering - excess water brings a danger of fungi diseases. Coraljade is fully hardy to abt. -40 °C (USDA zone 3).
