Crimson Sentry is most certainly a key feature of many mid-sized and small gardens. Its yearly growths are short so it will easily fit even in a front yard.
It is an eye-catching variety of Norway maple owing to the foliage. The leaves are bright purple-burgundy when young, and deep crimson red throughout the summer. In the autumn they change to coppery brown or honey-yellow. Flowers are gathered in corymbs, have bright red stalks and yellow stamens. The bark is almost grey and beautifully contrasts with freshly emerging leaves.
The growth is strictly upright, branches are strong and never droop. Its usual size is 3-5 and is therefore suitable for medium sized as well as small gardens. It easily adapts to any type of soil, but prefers humus-rich, moist soil. We suggest treating it against fungal diseases early in the spring when the leaves emerge. Then, from early summer, check it now and then for white spots which would manifest the powdery mildew. Treat it with a suitable chemical with copper content immediately. Fully hardy to -34°C (USDA zone 4).
