Berberis thunbergii 'ROSE GLOW' barberry

Rose Glow is an attractive barberry variety with deep purple red leaves marbled light pink. They are deciduous and remain coloured like that for most of the season at the top of the shrub. Foliage inside the shrub lacks variegation totally, and shows deep burgundy red colour which makes a lovely contrast with the younger leaves at the top. In April and May small yellow flowers appear in profusion, followed by tiny red fruit in autumn.
Young plants remain upright for a long time, and become slightly arching with age, keeping its central part quite upright. Rose Glow barberry grows at moderate growth rate and makes a nice shape without pruning. Like other barberries its branches have short spikes. Thanks to its unique colour it will look great planted among green- or yellow-leaved shrubs, or as a specimen in its own container.
Barberries will grow almost anywhere apart from too boggy soil. It virtually thrives on neglect. Coloured varieties do best in full sun but partial shade is acceptable, too. Pruning, if at all needed, is good for young plants to achieve good branching at the base, and becomes non-essential later. Still, hard pruning can be done to rejuvenate old plants. Fully hardy to approx. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
