DITHANE fungicide
Dithane is a well‑known broad‑spectrum contact fungicide that protects fruit, vegetables, vines, and ornamentals against a wide range of fungal diseases. It forms a protective film on the leaf surface, preventing spores from germinating and infections from spreading. For decades it has been one of the most widely used preventive fungicides in both gardens and agriculture.
-
What it can do: Protects potatoes against late blight, tomatoes against blight and leaf spot, onions and leeks against downy mildew, vines against downy mildew, apples against scab, peaches against leaf curl, roses against black spot, and many other crops against leaf diseases. It also shows a side effect against mites.
-
What it cannot do: It does not act curatively – once infection is established, it cannot stop it. It does not penetrate plant tissues, only protects the surface. Repeated spraying every 7–10 days is necessary.
-
What to use instead: Alternatives include systemic fungicides (e.g. Signum, Horizon, Teldor) that also act curatively. In organic farming, copper‑based products or biologicals (e.g. Polyversum) are used.
Dithane contains mancozeb (750 g/kg), a dithiocarbamate fungicide. It acts as a multi‑site inhibitor (FRAC group M3), blocking several enzymatic processes in fungal cells and thus preventing spore germination and mycelial growth. Thanks to this multi‑site action, the risk of resistance development is very low. On leaves it creates a protective coating that is resistant to wash‑off by rain. Pre‑harvest intervals vary by crop (3–42 days).
-
Application: spray preventively, ideally before infection periods. Repeat every 7–10 days, especially in wet weather.
