Hypericum

St. John’s wort is a well know perennial from our meadows and fields. However, there are also a few woody species popular for their shrubby habit and extended flowering period in summer. Kalm’s St. John’s wort is one of them.
Description of the plant:

Latifolia is a St. John’s wort selection with broader and larger leaves. They are deciduous, narrowly lance-shaped, rich green, and completely cover the plant before the flowers open. Those are small, 3-4 cm across, saucer-shaped, golden yellow with a profusion of stamens in the centre. Blooming begins in July and continues until early autumn which makes it one of the most attractive and longest flowering shrubs of late summer. Kalm’s St. John’s wort makes a dense, rather low, rounded shrub. To keep it compact and bushy prune it in early spring – remove last year’s growths by a 50-80%.

Growing conditions and care

Grow these smaller woody hypericums in full sun, moderately fertile soil that is very well drained. It is absolutely pest-free and disease resistant. Fully hardy to min. -30 °C (USDA zone 5) and suitable for year-round cultivation in outdoor pots with good drainage and without saucers.
