Description of the plant

This holly was given the name Alaska as it is the hardiest holly of all. From our experience we know that it is not only heavy frost hardy, but it can also stand up to direct sunlight in winter without any signs of sunburn. Well done!

The medium-sized leaves are emerald green, toothed, glossy and very decorative. Alaska is rather irregular in growth so if you desire for a compact, densely branched shrub, a little of pruning will be necessary. On the other hand, however, we emphasize that this shrub is a somewhat slow grower so do not cut it back too much.

This shrub is also very fructiferous – at the end of autumn it has many red berries which attract birds. This plant is female so it needs a male variety nearby, in an area of maximum a couple of kilometers where the bees can carry the pollen, so it can produce berries. Obviously, the best is to have a male plant in the same garden. Ideal pollinators are Blue Prince® or Casanova.

Growing conditions and care

It is very much soil tolerant, and prefers moist sites. Fully hardy to about -28°C (USDA zone 5).
