Phlox 'ZIGEUNERBLUT' moss phlox

Zigeunerblut is a German variety of moss phlox with the most amazing colour of flowers. Its variety name already ‘Gipsy Blood’ implies a very rich crimson red colour that turns slightly purple red during the blooming period. It flowers from about mid May for 3-4 weeks.
Zigeunerblut is an interspecific hybrid between phlox douglasii and phlox subulata. The first parent gave it a very low habit and slow growth rate, and the latter rich green, short, evergreen, linear leaves.
Grow moss phlox in rockeries, slopes, and throws in full sun. They like almost any well-draining soil. Once established they take long periods of drought. Trim them after flowering to keep the plant compact and dense without empty centres. We strongly suggest using a mulching woven to suppress the weeds around that would be a nightmare to get rid of later. Very hardy to about -45°C.
