Pinus peuce Balkan pine, Macedonian pine

Pinus
Pine trees are superb trees which grow in a wide climate scale - from cold northern countries to hot coastal sites. They are probably most beautiful in their natural environment.Macedonian pine is very attractive for its elegant shape and fluffy appearance. It comes from south of Yugoslavia, Albania, and Greece and bears stiff, dark blue-green needles with silvery grey underneath which gives it an overall blue-green effect. It forms a pyramidal shape when young, narrowing with age. Plants take about 10 years to start growing fast. Then they can make 25-30 cm per year, finishing with some 10m in Central Europe. However, in its home environment it can reach almost twice as much in full maturity.
It is soil tolerant but will be poor in calcareous soil. It prefers evenly moist and slightly acidic locations. As all other pines Macedonian pine needs full sun, too. It withstands air pollution and is hardy to about -34°C.
