Pinus strobus 'PENDULA' Weymouth pine, white pine

White (Weymouth) pines are very popular for their soft needles which you want to touch over and over again. They are usually long, silvery blue-green and come in whorls of 5. Pendula is a picturesque variety with arcing branches and weeping needles. The stem is commonly staked to a support on young plants and when a desired height is reached, support is removed and the pine makes its unique roof-like, cascading canopy. The branches may touch the ground on adult plants.
Pines are not pruned heavily, only new growths can be clipped or removed. Still, if you are after a really odd shape it can be trained by removing some branches or forming their growing angle. But generally it is left to its own devices as it makes a bizarre shape even without your help.
Pines like sunny locations and well-drained, sandy soil, they do not need much fertilizing. They are practically maintenance-free. We recommend avoiding planting ribes (currant) nearby as they host diseases harmful for white pines. Fully hardy to about -37°C (USDA 3).
