Prunus avium 'Büttners Rote Knorpelkirsche' ALTENBURGER MELONENKIRSCHE sweet cherry - medium late

Büttners Rote Knorpelkirsche is a great and unique sweet cherry variety from German Halle found already in 1795. In early 2000‘ it was renamed to ALTENBURGER MELONENKIRSCHE which truly does no make its pronunciation any easier.

This cherry produces excellent fruit of unique taste and beautiful exterior. The skin is glossy, rich yellow with red russets on sun facing parts, rounded to partially elliptic. The flesh is yellow, moderately juicy, very sweet with a little bit of acidity and watermelon aroma which makes it stand apart from all other sweet cherries. It produces reliable and heavy yields, and matures from mid July.

It is self-sterile and requires a pollinator – another cherry tree to produce fruit. Pollinators must flower at the same time, and usually mature in the same pariod. Good pollinators are: Hedelfingen, Regina, Napoleonova, Kordia, Stella, or Van.

It exhibits moderate vigour, and forms a rounded crown with slightly flattened top. Cherry trees like slightly acidic, humus rich, well drained but evenly moist soil. When the fruit is formed some extra watering is a help in dry seasons – cherry trees dislike drought. Fully hardy to min. -29°C.
