Prunus × subhirtella 'FUKUBANA' Higan cherry

Fukubana is another beautiful flowering Higan cherry for spring display. It produces masses of unique, almost star-shaped, semi-double, rich pink flowers in early spring. The flowers look like those on deutzias and even though they do not last over a long time they make a stunning show with its colour and abundancy.

Fukubana is a medium-fast growing, small tree. Its branches grow upright first, and later they tend to arch to sides as they get longer, forming almost an umbrella-shaped crown. Deciduous leaves are cherry-like, elliptic and finely serrated at margins. In summer they are rich green and in autumn they turn fantastic shades of brilliant golden-yellow, orange and fiery red. Fukubana cherry is never passed without an admiring look in autumn.

Flowering cherries can take almost any well-drained soil. But if you are after a good looking tree grow it in slightly acidic, evenly moist soil. Pruning, if needed, should be done immediately after flowering to prevent silver leaf and bacteria canker, and to encourage new growths that will bear flowers. Fully hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5), perhaps a little lower.
