Smooth cypress is an extraordinary conifer whose steel-blue needles will leave no doubt that this one is really something.
The species of this cypress comes from SW of the USA, while Fastigiata variety was selected in Italy. It has distinctly silvery-blue to glaucous colour of thread-like needles and branches. They are smooth, not prickly, hence its name smooth cypress.
Natural shape is conical and even without pruning it keeps quite a dense habit. Pruning and trimming however is very common in this case and should be carried out at the end of spring at the earliest, and then whenever and as many times as needed by mid autumn. Do not cut into old wood.
Smooth cypress will grow in any well-drained soil in full sun, sheltered from cold, drying winds. Its tested hardiness is -24°C with reported survival at -27°C without any injury at all. Though, we still recommend avoiding mountainous regions with long-lasting winter, frost pockets, and open hilly landscapes where we have not had a chance to test it yet.
