Lilyturf is a unique plant that is often sold in grass sections of garden centres. However, it belongs to the lily family, hence its name. It comes from shady forests of Eastern Asia.

Variegata is an attractive version of lilyturf. It has ribbon-like, semi-glossy foliage that is deep green in the centre and rich creamy yellow at the edges. The leaves are evergreen in mild winters. In midsummer spikes of lavender or violet flowers come out and usually do not overgrow the leaves. New spikes are produced continuously until early autumn.

In warmer parts of Europe this plants spreads out readily. In our climate (zone 6) it stays compact. It does well in moist, humus-rich soil but will tolerate almost any well-drained soil and preferably semi-shade. Mulching is recommended in frost prone areas. Hardy to min. -23°C.
