Chinese juniper Stricta Variegata is an unusual form of juniper with beautiful shape and variegated foliage. Unlike its close relative Variegata, this one shows variegation throughout the shrub in large patches. Its colour is from rich cream to soft yellow. The green parts of the plant consist of thin branches with scale-like mid to dark green needles that are soft when touched and as the only juniper resemble true cypress.
Being a sport of Stricta variety this juniper has slender habit, growing rather slowly. It becomes dense with age but not particularly fat. It will enrich the landscape with its vertical accent as well as bi-coloured foliage. Adult plants may reach about 3m. Pruning is not needed but can be done in early spring or mid-summer.
Chinese juniper likes full sun or some shade but will not thrive in deep shade. The soil should be well-drained, preferably calcareous and equally moist throughout the year – it does not like drought. There mulching is recommended. Hardy to about -30°C (USDA zone 4b).
