New York aster is an old time favourite in Czech and Slovak gardens. These plants are carefree and flower over a long period. Since they are so attractive and popular breeders keep coming up with new, improved varieties that brighten up our early autumn gardens.
Magic is the name of the new New York aster series. It makes compact and bushy plants with profusion of double flowers early in the season – while older aster varieties are yet making buds these are flowering freely. Magic asters start blooming in August and continue until mid to late autumn. Moreover, they are more resistant to common aster diseases such as powdery mildew and black spot.
Magic White is a white flowering variety with yellow centres that mature to orange-red. It flowers over a long period.
New York aster needs evenly moist, fertile soil of almost any pH value. Grow it in full sun and fertilize annually for profuse flowering. Cut back to ground level in early spring. Hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3).
