Perennials Summer blooms |
There are a number of hyssop species found in mostly temperate climate and only a few of them can survive winters of zones 5 or 6. This short-lived perennial is ideal for dry climates which is perhaps why Thompson&Morgan came up with this hardy hybrid called Apricot Sprite. If planted in well-drained soil it can take both cold winters of zone 6 and wet winters of the UK.
Apricot Sprite hyssop is a compact growing perennial with shorter stems producing a profusion of apricot orange, tubular flowers from early summer until late autumn. They are loved by butterflies (and hummingbirds). The flowers are long and very slim and look great both in a cottage garden as well as in modern pots in cities. Leaves are mid green and not as much of ornamental value but great as a perfume producer. They contain an essence which is readily activated by just a soft touch and the foliage ejects a dose of anise and lemon perfume. They can be used to make tea of, for scenting fresh salads and also pastries when making cooked desserts – the essence brings not only perfume but also anise taste.
This hyssop needs full sun and well-drained soil – in wet soil it will most certainly die during winter. Grow it in a mixed border, a rockery, or along pathways where you can enjoy its perfume when you gently crush its leaves just by passing it. Hardy to about -24°C (USDA zone 6) and we recommend covering the clump with fir branches for winter.
