Red Rocket is a Dutch selection of red hot poker, found in 2006 by Pieter Schreurs as a natural mutation of an older variety called Nancy’s Red. This new selection has stronger, healthier, and faster growth producing flowers earlier and over a long period – often from early July until September. The spike-like racemes are composed of small, rich coral red tubular flowers on strong, green stems.
Narrow, linear leaves are dark green and look like daylily leaves but are more erect. In mild winters they could remain evergreen until spring. Otherwise they fade out in late November and are followed by new foliage in mid to late spring.
Grow red hot poker it in full sun, in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. This variety is hardy to about -24°C if mulched, protecting the clump with a layer of fir branches is recommended for winter in zone 6. Protected variety - US patent No. PP21,905.
