Shepherd’s scabious is a maintenance-free perennial from South and Western Europe. It forms neat cushions, densely covered with narrowly lance-shaped, light to mid green leaves. They look like moss mounds and are enhanced with flowers that appear on slender stems, about 15-20 cm above the foliage from early July. They are almost spherical, powder blue to light violet, and continue coming out until late September.

Shepherd’s scabious likes well-drained, moderately fertile, sandy soil, and location in full sun. It can take light shade, too, for part of the day but will flower significantly less. Ideal for rockeries and edges of borders. Hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5).
