Plumosa Aurea is a beautiful Chinese juniper variety that is nice to touch – non prickly. That is because it makes small, scale-like leaves (needles), lying flat along the stems. They are bright yellow-green in spring, pale golden in summer, and golden-brown or coppery orange in autumn and winter.

It grows rather slowly, forming a dense, widely funnel-shaped shrub that is only about 1m tall and 1.2-1.5m wide in 15 years. Chinese juniper likes full sun or some shade but will not thrive in deep shade. The soil should be well-drained, preferably calcareous and equally moist throughout the year – it does not like drought. There mulching is recommended. Hardy to about -30°C (USDA zone 4b).
