Although Colorado spruce originates in the Rocky Mountains of Canada and the USA, it has been in wide cultivation in Europe and its colder regions. Iseli Fastigiate is another clone from the Iseli Nurseries in the USA. It was introduced in 1975 and bears steel-blue needles decorating strictly upright growing branches. The habit is very formal and neat without any pruning. The plant keeps its shape until maturity and benefits from strong branches that do not bend under a heavy load of fresh snow.
Spruce is widely soil adaptable provided the soil is well-drained. It likes neutral to slightly acidic soil and full sun. No fertilizing is necessary. It usually needs no pruning but trimming is possible and is best done in early spring. Fully hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3).
