Barnesii is a lovely variety of male fern. It produces narrow, erect fronds of somewhat ruffled, mid green foliage. Individual leaflets are distinctly lobed. The fronds can grow up to 60-80 cm tall.
Male fern thrives in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in partial shade or shade. Sometimes it is classified as semi-evergreen which is partially true: the fronds do take quite a strong frost but the first wet snow usually bends or even breaks their stalks so everything lies buried under snow, unseen, unappreciated. Hardy to about -34°C (USDA zone 4).
