Linden trees are usually large plants that can be found in broad avenues, in parks or in old villages. It is our national tree (Czech Republic). They are beautiful but due to their size only a few gardens can accommodate one. As the demand was so high for smaller-sized plants the breeders came with a few varieties in the last few decades that will also fit into medium-sized gardens.
Winter Orange is an outstanding linden tree variety. It features rich orange colour of branches in winter, vivid yellow leaves in autumn, and bright red buds in spring. The leaves are broadly heart-shaped, mid green, deciduous. Flowers come out in July and attract bees which produce very aromatic honey out of its pollen. Winter Orange linden tree makes widely pyramidal crown with a rounded top. The canopy is dense and casts deep shade. It does not grow as fast as the species.
Grow linden trees in full sun or partial shade. It likes moist but well-drained soil, preferably alkaline or neutral. It can take drought but may get prone to pest and diseases on dry sites. Stake young trees for at least three years from planting. Fully hardy to -40°C (USDA zone 3).
