Fernleaf peony is a collector’s choice. This perennial peony is a true gem in any rockery or garden bed. It emerges in early spring with fern-like, finely divided, cut leaves that form a fluffy tuft from which comes out a spherical bud that will open into a lovely flower. It needs warm and sunny weather to begin flowering . Plena is a variety with double, rich red flowers with a light burgundy overlay.
The leaves resemble Adonis plants hence the alternative name Adonis peony. It forms a dense clump with age but a lot of patience is advised. It is difficult to propagate and quite slow growing, so it needs plenty of care and time before it gets on the garden centre shelf which is why it gets rather expensive. But believe me that it is worth the investment. A unique plant you will adore every spring in flower and all summer with leaves. In very hot areas (zone 8-9) it may go dormant in summer, though.
Fernleaf peony needs very well-drained, sandy, medium fertile or poor soil. It needs full sun and does not mind wind or deep frost. It is said to withstand winters of USDA zone 2.
