LO & BEHOLD, what a name! Yes, seeing a butterfly bush so small will leave you staring indeed. This new introduction from the breeders of J.C.Raulston Arboretum in North Carolina, USA, is proud to be the very first dwarf butterfly bush in commerce, patented in 2009.

Blue Chip is this new dwarf buddleja with violet blue flowers with rich orange throats. The scented inflorescence is a little shorter than on its taller relatives, still, it attracts butterflies no less. Blooming begins in late June and continues until early September if the weather is sunny and warm. Deciduous leaves are lanceolate, pale green to almost blue-green, and slightly hairy. Blue Chip is a low shrub with prostrate branches which are best pruned hard in spring for best results.

Butterfly bush requires little care. Plant it in full sun, in well-drained humus-rich soil. It will die in boggy soil after winter. Though hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5) it performs better in warmer zones. For planting in colder areas we recommend buying older plants with woody framework.
