Japanese red pine is valued for its soft, long needles of lighter green colour. There are plenty of varieties in the trade, some of which are quite rare such as this Fastigiata variety. As the name suggests it is a columnar pine with soft needles you like to touch every time you pass by.
It grows moderately into a compact, upright column that needs no pruning or trimming to look great. In maturity its width is just a little over one meter which makes it ideal for mixed beds with low and prostrate growing plants like sun-loving rhododendrons, azaleas or mountain laurels. It will also look great as a slender specimen in a small yard.
Pine trees hate wet feet. They need well-drained soil that is kept moist in their first year. Further watering is not necessary, however, mulching retaining all-year-round moisture results in better growth and nicer plants. Fully hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5) and suitable for outdoor pots.
