Avens is a pretty perennial whose wild forms can be found on every continent except Australia. Scarlet avens comes from the Balkans and is cultivated for its compact growth and extremely long flowering period.

Orange Queen avens is true to its name. It has the richest orange or almost scarlet colour on the single flowers which may contain a few more smaller petals around the centre, yet keeping the flower flat. They are borne on 10-15 cm tall stems from as early as late April until early July, and then again in late summer. Basal leaves are rounded to kidney-shaped, shallowly toothed, mid green, and resemble those of pelargonium. They make a nice groundcover in mass plantings which remains evergreen in mild winters.

Avens is not picky about soil type. It does best in fertile, medium moist but well-drained soil in full sun. A little extra feeding will bring lush foliage but is not necessary for flower production – avens will always flower if grown in full sun. Hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5).
