Deciduous broadleaf Summer blooms |
ALL SUMMER RED® is a novelty weigela selected in the Netherlands in 2007. It was bred by Gijsbertus Verhoef as a cross between weigela Evita and weigela Red Prince. The result is a compact shrub with rich coloured flowers over a long period of time. Patent No. PP23654 was granted in 2011.
ALL SUMMER RED® weigela has rather long, funnel shaped, slightly narrowed flowers of rich carmine red colour. They appear from mid May and make a huge display in about mid June. Then comes a short break, and from early to mid July new flowers come out to keep popping up until early to mid autumn. This variety is not supposed to make seeds. Deciduous leaves are broadly elliptic, dark green when mature while young foliage has some red hues and margins.
It is quite a compact shrub and is listed among dwarf weigelas. It needs no pruning but you can cut it in any manner you like: remove flowering branches right after flowering by about a third or half in midsummer. Remember that summer pruning will limit the number of flowers by the end of the season.
Weigelas thrive in semi-fertile, slightly moist soil, preferably in full sun. They can take heavy and compacted soil, too, but will need more time to become nice and bushy. Hardy to approx. -29°C (USDA zone 5) but not suitable for outdoor pots (risk of drying out in winter).
