Deciduous broadleaf Summer blooms |
Following a world-wide success with Pinky Winky® hydrangea, in 2005 Belgian breeder Johan van Huylenbroeck came up with another hydrangea beauty whose name was no less cute: BOBO®. A cross between the species and a variety called Pink Diamond was patented as 'Ilvobo' under PP22782 in 2012.
Panicle hydrangea BOBO® is unique for its small and compact growth and incredible amount of flowers. This variety produces numerous panicles, 25-30 cm tall and about 15 cm wide, composed of sterile flowers that emerge creamy white with lime green shades in midsummer, and mature to pale pastel pink in late summer and autumn. They are borne atop strong crimson brown stems which do not bend even after a heavy rain. Deciduous leaves are ovate, pointed, fresh green.
BOBO® grows medium fast into a rounded, symmetrical shrub which benefits from regular pruning in early spring. Cut back previous year's growths to 2-3 pairs of buds every year. The result will be a bushy plant with large flower heads.
Panicle hydrangeas grow in almost any soil type, however for best results provide humus-rich and moist soil that will not be too compacted or shallow. You can plant them almost anywhere as they take sun or shade, but sun is best for profuse flowering. They are extremely hardy and withstand min. -37°C (USDA zone 3), and are perfect for outdoor pots.
