Baya® Marisa is another jewel among red-fleshed apples. It is a German variety bred by Dr.Michael Neumüller from Bayerisches Obstzentrum in München. It produces medium sized apples with glossy red skin and pink flesh with white marbling. The taste is sweet and sour with well pronounced acidity which is not strong but pleasantly refreshing. It ripens in September and can be eaten off the tree or stored by about late December. Flowers are deep pastel pink. Leaves emerge dark burgundy red and mature to deep green with burgundy red shades. It has a weak, rather slow growth, no need for pruning. Heavy cropper.
Apple trees like medium fertile, well-drained soil and full sun. They cannot grow in compacted, heavy clay or water-logged soil. Being self-sterile it needs another pollinator for heavy crop, such as Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Golden Reinette, Granny Smith, James Grieve + Red, Kent, Melrose, Opal, Pinova, Rajka, Rubinette, Spartan, Starking a Topaz. Hardy to min. -29°C (USDA zone 5) and suitable for all regions including colder ones.
