Deciduous broadleaf Summer blooms |
Jackmanii is one of the oldest clematis varieties (from 1858) as well as one of the very first and very popular hybrids with large flowers. This explains why it is so widespread by today. Its 4-petalled deep purple blue flowers are negligently covering fences and posts and other supports, creating a cottage garden feeling. It is not so compact compared to some modern hybrids which produce flowers in almost flat sheets around the fence.
It belongs to Group 3 clematis, flowering in mid- and late summer. Flowers appear on new growths. Cut back all the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds, 15-20 cm above soil level, before growth begins in early spring.
Clematis likes deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil that remains cool. You can grow a plant below clematis that will provide shade for its roots. Add garden compost in late winter and mulch it well. Fully hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
