Etna® is the queen of laurels. Its bright emerald green leaves are glossy and healthy, slightly curved at the ends and edges which add plasticity to the overall appearance of the plant. New leaves emerge copper orange and red. Etna’s foliage is much more tolerant of winter sun scald than most laurels.
Etna® is one of the best cherry laurels for growing as a standard tree. It naturally forms a compact, dense, rounded crown that doesn’t need pruning to look good. It does not flower much but when it does it makes erect racemes of small, creamy white, fragrant flowers that are seldom followed by purple-black, spherical fruit (berries), loved by birds, not edible for humans, but not poisonous. Pruning, if at all needed, can be done in early spring after frosts, or in midsummer.
Laurels need slightly deep and fertile, acidic, moist soil, and extra watering in frost-free periods in winter to prevent from drying out before the ground gets frozen. It will thrive in full sun or part shade, and will also tolerate being grown in full shade. It seldom suffers from chlorosis (leaves turning yellow owing to lack of iron in the soil). When the leaves do turn dull green or yellow the soil is too wet. Fully hardy to -27°C (USDA zone 5b).
