Perennials Summer blooms |
Yarrow is a lovely perennial ideal for dry and neglected locations. There are about 85 species and numerous hybrids produced for better garden performace, richer and longer lasting colours, extended flowering time, and stronger stems.
Summerwine is a beautiful yarrow variety from Germany which belongs to the Galaxy Hybrids. They are crosses between a.aegyptiaca and a.millefolium. Plants from this group bear larger flower heads atop stronger and taller stems. Summerwine yarrow makes dark purple pink to nearly wine red flowers composed in flattened corymbs 8-10 cm across. They are borne atop about 60 cm tall stems. Blooming begins in late June and may continue until late summer. Fern-like leaves are finely cut and rich grass green, basal leaves are larger than stem leaves. Removing stems with spent flowers will encourage growth of new stems with new flowers until the weather remains warm and sunny. Summerwine is very similar to newer variety Saucy Seduction which has white centres while Summerwine has yellow centres.
Yarrow is a maintenance-free perennial suitable for standard flower beds as well as dry slopes and rockeries. It tolerates a wide range of soils except for boggy and wet. Full sun is needed for profuse flowering. Fully hardy to -40°C (USDA zone 3).
