Rose rock cress, or also coast rock cress is a perennial from California, USA. Still, it was observed that it prefers milder climates when it comes to summer heat. It is a very early species which, in spite of being short-lived, is valued for its profuse flowering of rich colours at times when most spring bulbs and perennials are still dormant, or only showing buds.
ROSE DELIGHT™ is a rose rock cress variety from North American Syngenta Flowers introduced in 2003. It makes a stunning display of small, 4-petalled, rich purple pink flowers atop only about 10 cm tall stems. Narrowly obovate leaves are formed in a flat rosette just above the ground. It is a perfect border edge plant or a rockery placed among perennials which emerge later in the season and take over when this spring gem goes dormant.
Rose rock cress loves full sun. It needs a well-drained soil of any pH, and enough nutrients. If your soil is sandy or poor, feed it in late summer to make it stronger before winter, and in early spring when you see it emerge. It hates winter wet. In well-drained soil it can take frost down to about -34°C (USDA zone 4) and is suitable for outdoor pots.
