I love colours and I am always thrilled to see a new colour on a well-known plant species. For this reason I absolutely adore virtually every plant from Harini Korlipra, a great breeder from American nursery Terra Nova® whose work is easily recognized by solid, rich, unique, and most often warm colours. This time she created something absolutely extraordinary.
SUPREME™ Cantaloupe is a terrific coneflower variety whose colour is aptly described in its name - a fresh and ripe orange honey dew melon. A sort of pastel orange colour with salmon pink tones. Its fully double flowers form noble heads and release an exquisite fragrance. Stems are strong, 60-70cm tall, and produce more flower buds when the previous phase has finished. The variety received medals and nominations but who cares about them when you can have it in your garden and enjoy its beauty from mid July until the last sunny and warm days of October.
Leaves are deep green, lanceolate, and may suffer from diseases if grown in wet or compacted soil. Patented as PP24897 in 2014.
The plant is usually trouble-free and resistant, just be careful if slugs are present in your garden. Since coneflowers emerge quite late, often when slugs are already in their lethal strength, they could gobble up newly emerging foliage totally and thus destroy the plant before it even comes out.
Coneflowers will tolerate almost any soil type but boggy. It loves full sun. It is suitable for mixed borders with perennials, or can be used as a flowering feature among low shrubs and conifers, and looks lovely when planted in a mass in a container on patios and balconies. Fully hardy to min -34°C (USDA zone 4).
