Vampira is a German series of apple varieties with red flesh named after a local variety celebrating its market breakthrough in the new millennium. Honestly, red-flesh apples are not new, they belong to a long range of old varieties, they just were not so much in demand for some time. There are quite a few varieties available currently and as they are very similar in taste and appearance we list them all here.

Red-flesh apples are usually late maturing varieties producing fruit that is ready to pick up from October onwards and store well until late winter. They boast pink to rich purple red flush with white marbling around the centre. The taste is commonly sharp with some sweetness and plenty of juice. Fruit is almost rounded, small to mid-sized, and has maroon, ruby red, or at least heavily red flushed skin. Trees grow slower and are very resistant to powdery mildew as well as other apple tree diseases. Yields are not regular. Flowers are deep pink to dusky red.

Apple trees will grow in almost any well-drained soil but for best results provide them with deep, fertile soil and keep it moist at least 6 months after transplanting, and in early summer when fruit is formed. Many vampire apples are partially self-fertile. Those which are not will need a pollinator such as Idared, James Grieve, Champion or similar. Pruning can be done in frost-free periods of winter but trees benefit from being left to their own devices. Very hardy to abt. -34 °C (USDA zone 4).
