Gaura is a perennial with extra long blooming season and which requires very little or no care at all. It emerges in late spring with deep burgundy red leaves that turn green in summer. It can multiply previous year's size in no time and become almost three times as large. BABY BUTTERFLY™ is a gaura series bred by Korean breeder Kong Young Park from Icheon-si. His aim is to bring compact and low growing plants with profuse flowering. BABY BUTTERFLY™ Dark Pink was granted these patents: PP30170 (USA – 2019) and EU 46654 (Europe – 2017).
BABY BUTTERFLY™ Dark Pink is a compact gaura reaching only some 20-30 cm in height and width. Unlike most other varieties its stems do not continue growing upwards throughout the summer but exhibit profuse branching resulting in an immensely flowering tuft. The flowers are medium pink flushed dark pink and open from deep maroon buds. Stems and young foliage are maroon, too.
We noticed that if the plant is frequently fed it is big and beautiful but tends to mature more quickly and may become very short-lived and die prematurely. If your soil is reasonably fertile we recommend only one feeding - just before the buds begin to form, if you want to prolong its life.
In the wild gaura lives in naturally moist lands where it thrives. In the garden you need to provide equally moist but well drained soil in full sun, yet it tolerates summer drought once established. In spring cut back to about 3-5 cm above ground level after all frosts (mid-late April in C.E.). It is hardy to about -25 °C (USDA zone 6) and mulching is recommended in areas with long-lasting frost without snow.
