Dryopteris x remota scaly buckler fern

Scaly buckler fern is a European hybrid between d. affinis and d. expansa. Its natural habitat is a wide belt from Ireland, across Central Europe to Est Asia. It is a graceful fern with large, arching fronds composed of small, finely dissected, glossy leaflets of medium green colour. The whole frond is up to one meter long and 20-30 cm wide but thanks to fine foliage it does not appear so robust. Under good woodland conditions it readily self-seeds creating a handsome understory.
It grows in semi shade or deep shade in constantly moist well-drained soil where its fronds look best. It is not picky about soil pH. The leaves are very hardy and withstand about -15 °C for a short period without any damage. Still we recommend cutting them all off in spring to encourage new growths. As a perennial it is fully root-hardy to about -40 °C (USDA zone 3).
