Perennials Summer blooms |
Beebalm (monarda) is a summer-flowering plant from North America. There are about 15 species including both perennials and annuals, all of which come mostly from open and dry places like prairies. It belongs among the longest flowering plants of summer and its aromatic leaves would be used as a cheap substitute of bergamot that is typical for the famous Earl Grey tea. We specialize solely in perennial monardas, mostly monarda didyma and monarda fistulosa and their hybrids.
Schneewittchen is a German translation of ‘Snow White’ as well as a variety name of this beebalm. It is as slender and upright as an image of a charming girl of exceptional beauty. Its pure white flowers sit atop almost a meter tall, bright green stems and come out from July until the last warm days of early autumn. They are edible. Deciduous leaves are widely lance-shaped, bright green and sufficiently resistant to powdery mildew unless exposed to extremes such as long-lasting drought or water-logged ground. They are fragrant and can be used in tea and other cold drinks. Schneewittchen beebalm is an old variety which yet today is considered the best white on the market.
Monarda grows reliably in almost any well-drained, medium fertile soil, preferably in full sun. If forms dense clumps and remains healthy unless overwatered – then its foliage may be prone to powdery mildew. Hardy to min. -34 °C (USDA zone 4).
