BELONGS TO CATEGORIES | Deciduous broadleaf |
Trident maple is an attractive medium-sized tree with unusual leaves. They are three-lobed and their size, depth of lobing as well as autumn colour may vary greatly with location.
The deciduous leaves are deep green and glossy, turning yellow, orange and bright red in autumn. They change colours later than other maples and last longer, often until winter. Branches on young trees are usually upright, later spreading forming a wide crown.
Although this tree can reach some 7 meters in maturity it grows slowly and its size can easily be maintained by pruning at the end of winter. Thanks to slow growth and attractive foliage it is popular for bonsai work. It withstands wind, drought, air pollution and restricted root space. Fully hardy to -29°C (USDA zone 5).
