Pinus mugo ssp. rostrata mountain pine

Pinus
Pine trees are superb trees which grow in a wide climate scale - from cold northern countries to hot coastal sites. They are probably most beautiful in their natural environment. This pine is a subspecies of two-needle mountain pine. It has upright, compact growth and is ideal for small-sized gardens as it grows max. 4m tall and 3m wide. Rostrata is a selection of mountain pine with one great difference – it has a central leader which makes that neat, symmetrical, tree-like shape. It grows slowly and forms a dense shrub. Its origin is not clear, it is probably a natural cross between pinus uncinata and pinus mugo.
Unlike uncinata it needs well drained soil, plenty of sunshine and is lime-tolerant. Fully hardy to approx. -45°C (USDA zone 2).
